What Is Showtime Planning for Canelo Alvarez After Fight vs. Alfredo Angulo?

When it comes to Saul Alvarez, one thing appears certain.

One clear defeat doth not a pay-per-view attraction spoil.

Though he was a majority loser after a desultory 12-round dance with Floyd Mayweather Jr. last September in Las Vegas, the 23-year-old Mexican redhead has by no means reached the end of the line when it comes to stoking the desires of premium cable television network executives.

Ample evidence of that reality comes Saturday night at the MGM Grand, where “Canelo” returns to the top of the marquee in a comeback encounter with fellow Mexican slugger Alfredo Angulo that will headline a four-bout card to be broadcast by Showtime beginning at 9 p.m. ET.

The appearance is Alvarez’s first since a Mayweather event that included a hyperbolic 10-city press tour beforehand and yielded arecord gross revenue of $150 million after generating 2.2 million PPVbuys.

Pacquiao vs. Bradley II preview on HBO on 3/29

HBO Sports’ groundbreaking “24/7” reality franchise, which has captured 17 Sports Emmy® Awards and produced 18 multi-part boxing editions since 2007, will look at the upcoming world welterweight championship rematch between Manny Pacquiao and unbeaten titleholder Timothy Bradley Jr. with 24/7 PACQUIAO/BRADLEY 2, a set of three shows debuting SATURDAY, MARCH 29 (midnight-12:30 a.m. ET/PT). Spanning three weeks, the three unique programs will offer inside access to the two elite fighters and their camps as they prepare for their intriguing welterweight title showdown April 12 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

“‘Pacquiao-Bradley 2’ is the ideal event to take the ‘24/7’ franchise and develop new ideas and programming, while continuing to provide viewers a compelling look at the intensity of the fighters as they prepare for this highly anticipated showdown,” noted Bernstein.

The second edition of 24/7 PACQUIAO/BRADLEY 2, debuting SATURDAY, APRIL 5 (11:30 p.m.-midnight), will be a traditional “24/7” presentation. The third show debuts THURSDAY, APRIL 10 (8:30-9:00 p.m.) on location from Las Vegas two nights before the high-stakes welterweight bout and will capture the energy and intensity of fight week.

Debuting immediately after the “HBO Boxing After Dark” doubleheader that begins at 10:00 p.m., 24/7 PACQUIAO/BRADLEY 2 will chronicle the road the two fighters have taken since their controversial first meeting in June 2012 and show how they visualize their highly anticipated rematch.

Born amid poverty in the Philippines, Manny Pacquiao (55-5-2, 38 KOs), 35, has met every challenge to become a worldwide star, capturing world titles in eight different weight divisions. He is the lone congressional representative from the Sarangani province of his homeland, winning reelection to a second term last year. Now, Pacquiao is determined to overcome the setback he experienced in 2012 when he and Bradley first tangled on the Las Vegas strip.

Timothy Bradley Jr. (31-0, 12 KOs), 30, is battled-tested and fearless, having scored wins in his remarkable pro career over the likes of Devon Alexander, Manny Pacquiao, Ruslan Provodnikov and Juan Manuel Marquez. Bradley’s triumphs over Provodnikov (named the “Fight of the Year” by the BWAA) and Marquez last year propelled the undefeated champ into the elite fighter category.

Pacquiao is expected to surround himself with a trusted contingent of family and friends as he works in the Philippines and then in Hollywood, Cal. with longtime trainer Freddie Roach. Team Bradley, under the guidance of trainer Joel Diaz, will hold camp in Bradley’s hometown of Palm Springs, Cal.

“Pacquiao vs. Bradley 2” takes place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday, April 12 at 9:00 p.m. (ET)/6:00 p.m. (PT), and will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View®.

Manny Pacquiao vs. Brandon Rios: Everything You Need to Know for Epic Fight

You’d think Brandon Rios would be the fighter with the most to prove Saturday in Macau, China. After all, it’s the young slugger’s first pay-per-view main event, his first time under the bright lights. Despite 33 career fights, this will be his debut on the world stage.

His opponent?

He’s been headlining title fights for years, compiling a 16-3-2 record with a belt on the line, and has beaten some of the best fighters of his era, including Oscar De La Hoya, Marco Antonio Barrera and Juan Manuel Marquez. Along the way, he’s become one of boxing’s most iconic stars and a hero to his countrymen in the Philippines.

And yet, despite his legacy and Hall of Fame career, it’s Manny Pacquiao facing all the tough questions going into the fight. The lasting image of the legend, one imprinted on the brains of boxing fans all over the world, is Pacquiao face down in the ring, courtesy of a Marquez right in the sixth round.

Pacquiao vs. Rios: Keys for Both Fighters in PPV Showdown

Two boxers at the crossroads of their respective careers will clash on Nov. 23 in Macau, China, when Manny Pacquiao and Brandon Rios go toe-to-toe for the vacantWBO International Welterweight Championship.

While Pacquiao appears to be near the end of his boxing career, Rios is trying to prove that he belongs in the elite company of the world’s other top fighters. Let’s take a look at some keys for both “Pac-Man” and “Bam Bam” heading into the big pay-per-view bout.

Pacquiao will enter this fight with a heavy heart following Typhoon Haiyan, which devastated his native Philippines earlier this month. The Filipino icon recently told reporters he would dedicate the fight to the victims of the typhoon, but that he would hold off on visiting the affected areas to offer help in order to focus on training.

A victory for the immensely popular Pacquiao could do wonders for the morale of his fellow countrymen, which he cited as a reason for his continued training. With his 35th birthday coming up in December, most wonder if he will have the same speed, strength and durability that he possessed in recent years.Pacquiao vs Rios Live Streaming Online

Legendary trainer Freddie Roach is literally in Pacquiao’s corner for this fight, so take his comments with a grain of salt, but he voiced his confidence in the boxing superstar in a recent media conference call, per

“If I see he is slowing down and slipping in the fight I will be the first one to tell him,” Roach said. “We have an agreement that I will tell him that and he will retire.  I don’t see him slipping in the gym at this moment and he’s doing really well.”

But talk is cheap, and the clock is counting down on Pacquiao’s career. With a win, we could possibly see the long-awaited matchup against Floyd Mayweather Jr. take shape. With a loss, it could be the end of Pacquiao’s illustrious career.

Manny Pacquiao vs. Brandon Rios: More Than Just a Battle from the Losers’ Bracket

Over the last several years, Manny Pacquiao has taken a lot of guff from some fans and media for fighting opponents coming off career-rattling losses. Of the Filipino icon’s last nine opponents, seven have come to fight him shortly after a major defeat. It’s an odd stat for an elite-level star and one that has served as a huge target for his detractors.

On November 23, in Macau, China, Pacquiao will be facing another opponent from the loser’s bracket, but the situation is much different this time.

Brandon Rios is no jaded, weary veteran pug, recently stripped of his career mojo by another elite fighter and he’s certainly no battered former champ staggering into a Pacquiao clash after a major whupping.Pacquiao vs.Rios Live Streaming Online

The 27-year-old “Bam Bam” is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Mike Alvarado in March, but it wasn’t the type of loss that should have any effect on a fighter like Rios. Actually, the Mexican-American brawler is such a gutsy, in your face character that it’s hard to imagine any loss deterring him from his seek and destroy ring style.

The loss to Alvarado was in a rematch of a brilliantly savage TKO 7 win just five months earlier. This time, though, Alvarado would avoid the toe-to-toe exchanges that led to his demise in their first fight and use lateral movement to negate the hard-charging Rios’ face-first style. Through twelve, Rios would win every minor battle, but ultimately lose the war to an opponent who opted to box rather than fight.

To Rios’ way of thinking, it was hardly a loss at all. He came to fight, Alvarado didn’t. What happened in March was more of a life lesson than anything else.

“The loss to Alvarado earlier this year was a blessing in disguise, because I lost the fight to the cards, a very close fight,” Rios said in an HBO blog published by “On the other hand, I won something else. I won the experience, the experience to never be overconfident again. To always train for all scenarios, and that’s exactly what I am going to do.”

As for Pacquiao, if there’s a right way to handle an ugly knockout loss, Manny seems to have found it.

“It was an exciting fight and I have not lost any sleep over it or dwelled on it,” Pacquiao said in his own blog. “It’s the nature of the sport, and you have to accept it. I was fully prepared, and had put in my time in training camp. I didn’t cut any corners.

Manny Pacquiao Fighter Blog Week Three: Brandon Rios

My two previous fights, though both officially losses, have not had a huge impact on me.

Though I accept the judges’ decision I still do not understand their decision to score the fight against me when I fought Timothy Bradley.  I was the aggressor throughout the fight.  You can clearly see that by mid-fight, Bradley stopped engaging with me because he couldn’t keep up with me and take the punishment I was giving him.  So he decided to run from me.  If there is a lesson to be learned from that fight I guess it’s not to take anything for granted.  I thought I won the fight then and I still think I won that fight.  If your opponent doesn’t want to fight, the judges should also take that into consideration.  I never felt that I lost that fight.  The media and fans never considered that fight a real loss.  Compare those feeling to the reaction Bradley faced from the same people.  He certainly did not get treated like a conquering champion. Those are his words not mine.  As for me, it did not really affect me and I was eager to move forward.

For my fourth fight against Juan Manuel Márquez I was determined to end our rivalry with finality.  In training camp — and it was one of my best camps — I was focused on being able to dominate Márquez from the opening bell.  I trained hard in camp to attack him from all angles.   And though he had his moments early in the fight, I knew I was beating him as the fight wore on.  I felt the momentum coming my way and I was hurting him badly.  I could see it and feel it.  But I got careless.  When I heard the sound  that only 10 seconds remained in Round Six  I could see he was teetering and I thought I could finish him right then or at least land one more major blow to give him and his trainer one more thing to think about between rounds.  But I was reckless…careless…in my attack and Márquez landed the perfect shot.  I watched the replay in my suite that night and I knew that I made a major error in a fight that I should have won and was winning.  But that’s boxing. Pacquiao vs Rios Live streaming Online It was an exciting fight and I have not lost any sleep over it or dwelled on it.  It’s the nature of the sport and you have to accept it.  I was fully prepared and had put in my time in training camp.  I didn’t cut an corners.

To prepare for Brandon Rios I began my training camp four weeks earlier than I normally do — 12 weeks total.  The first six weeks were dedicated to conditioning and the last six weeks to boxing.  It’s not so much what I have learned from the Bradley and Márquez fights that is preparing me for my battle with Rios, it’s what I have done in advance of my training camp for the Rios fight, and that is to rest.  Taking the longest break of my professional career refreshed me physically and mentally.  Though I always enjoy training for a fight, I was more eager than usual for this training camp.  I missed boxing.  I stayed in shape by playing basketball and volleyball daily and that was refreshing, too, because it gave me a healthy diversion from boxing.  But now that I am finally  back in the gym I feel like the 25-year-old Manny Pacquiao.  Speed, endurance, focus and power are all there. I feel like I’m gliding in the ring.  Sometimes I have to look down to see if my feet are even on the ground.  I feel great.  It has also been the most harmonious training camp I can remember, and that has been a big factor.

If fight vs Rios doesn’t go well, Pacquiao could call it quits considering retirement

BANGKOK—Manny Pacquiao’s trainer says the Filipino boxer will contemplate retirement if he fails to perform well against Brandon Rios this month.

Freddie Roach said if the Rios fight “does not go well, we will seriously talk about his retirement,” but that Pacquiao was training as well as ever for the November 24 bout in Macau.Pacquiao vs Rios Live Streaming Online

Pacquiao is coming off successive defeats against Timothy Bradley in a much-criticized judges’ decision, and then a knockout at the hands of Juan Manuel Marquez.Pacquiao vs Rios Live Streaming Online

A third successive defeat would put his career at the crossroads, and while Roach said performance levels were more important than results, he acknowledged serious thought would have to be given to the future of “Pac-man” if he does not return to his best in Macau.

Pacquiao is juggling his boxing career with responsibilities as a Philippine congressman and other outside interests, and defeat could see him turn his attentions fully to his commitments outside the ring.

Manny Pacquiao Beating Rios Tells Us Nothing of Pacman’s Future

Manny Pacquiao returns to the ring on November 23rd hoping to get back to winning ways after suffering back-to-back losses for the first time in his professional career. After dropping a controversial decision against Timothy Bradley, Pacquiao was then knocked out in devastating fashion by long-time rival Juan Manuel Marquez in their 4th encounter. He looks to get back on track with a bout against former WBA lightweight champion Brandon Rios in Macau.

While it’s entirely natural to wonder whether that type of stoppage would have a negative effect on a fighter, it’s comments from Rios’ trainer that caught my eye. Robert Garcia, who also trained Antonio Margarito for his 2010 fight with Pacquiao, suggests that age may have begun to affect the Filipino fighter.
